These were the words I was given and I took it to heart. "Take one thing in your life and fix it with positive thoughts".
Normally I don't post much on the weekends but this weekend is different. A week ago, my dear, beautiful friend left this world. Although I hadn't seen her in 10 years when we got back in touch it was like no time had passed, yet a lot had happened. A little over a year ago my friend was diagnosed with colon cancer. She was hospitalized for weeks, and endured surgeries, treatments and unfortunately all the other things that come along with a cancer diagnosis. It wasn't until several months after her initial diagnosis we made contact again. While I would always wish for more time I am so happy that I was able to keep in touch with her for the short time we had.
All through it though, she was the absolute best picture of strength and grace. She was her own best advocate, she was always researching, never taking no for an answer and in the midst of all she was going through still had time for others, to cheer them up, and to bring awareness to causes she felt strongly about. She allowed people to go on the journey with her sharing all the information she could so others could have the same resources she found, and so they wouldn't feel alone. She never waivered in her faith... I miss her so much, but I am not the only one... I have spent hours reading all the beautiful things others wrote about her. I have even caught myself going to text her to just check in like I did all the time and then I remember. Her life taught me so much in such a short amount of time... I found myself thinking there is more I should have, could have done. Then I realized it's not about that anymore. Now it is about keeping her memory alive and doing what I CAN do. Bringing awareness, sharing resources, sharing her life and her story.
I was just heartbroken I couldn't
be there to celebrate her life with her family and friends, I was so sad that I was supposed to be visiting the area in a few weeks but wouldn't have a chance to see her. I had a mutual friend who was kind enough to share with me something so important that it made me feel like I was there.... At the service there was a message. These were the words I was given and I took it to heart. "Take one thing in your life and fix it with positive thoughts". After it all, she was still there to build people up and give some key advice that it takes some people a life time to figure out. Thank you Devon for your kindness, generosity, love, compassionate and friendship. I will do my best to always bring awareness to the causes that were close to your heart.
